Grateful Dead Break Record For Most Billboard 200 Top 40 Albums

The Grateful Dead have broken the record for most top 40 albums in the Billboard 200 chart’s history, thanks to the latest release from their live back-catalog series, Dave’s Picks Vol. 49.

Dave’s Picks, Volume 49: Frost Amphitheatre, Stanford U., Palo Alto, CA (4/27/85 & 4/28/85), released on January 26th, debuted at No. 25 on the Billboard 200. Dave’s Picks Vol. 49 consists of two complete shows that the Dead played at Stanford University in April 1985.

The record has become the 59th album the band has placed on the Top 40, beating the previous record-holders: Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra, who were each tied with the Dead for 58 top-40-charting albums.

The record earned 21,000 equivalent album units in the U.S. in the week ending February 1, according to Luminate. The album was exclusively available as a four-CD set, with a limited run of 25,000 copies manufactured. It was sold only through the band’s official website.
