Elton John Achieves EGOT Status With Emmy Win

Elton John has achieved EGOT status after his Elton John Live: Farewell From Dodger Stadium earned him the Outstanding Variety Special (Live) Award at the Emmys in Los Angeles.

The Dodger Stadium concert was the final stop on the North American leg of John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour,” which reportedly grossed nearly a billion dollars.

The iconic British singer-songwriter already had won Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards in his prized career.

“We won an Emmy and I am on cloud nine!! Receiving this recognition is a testament to the passion and dedication of everyone involved, and I am so deeply grateful,” John wrote on Instagram.

John, who did not attend the Emmy Awards due a recent knee surgery, said in a statement, “I am incredibly humbled to be joining the unbelievably talented group of EGOT winners tonight. The journey to this moment has been filled with passion, dedication, and the unwavering support of my fans all around the world. Tonight is a testament to the power of the arts and the joy that it brings to all our lives. Thank you to everyone who has supported me throughout my career, I am incredibly grateful.”

“I am not Elton John, sadly he had a knee op. He’s absolutely fine but wanted to send his love and thanks to the Television Academy for this incredible award,” said producer Ben Winston, who went on stage with John’s husband, David Furnish, to collect the award.

John, who has six Grammy wins, two Oscars, and a Tony, is just the 19th artist to achieve EGOT status.
