KCHE
CELEBRATES 50 YEARS
In the Fall of 1952, three
men from the East Coast, Charles Reznikov, George Keller and Charles Hickman
received FCC approval to begin an AM radio station in Cherokee. All
three men moved their families to Cherokee and went on the air with their
first broadcast in January of 1953.
Reznikov and Hickman
operated management and Keller served as the chief engineer.
The station was sold in the early 1960 to Sterling Heil of Cherokee.
Reznikov served as sales manager and Keller remained as engineer.
In 1967, J. Alan Cramer of Wayne, Nebraska and Charles (Kay) Hutchinson of
Sioux City bought the station. Reznikov and Keller also remained as
employees. In September of 1976, Sioux Valley Broadcasting
Company, owned by John and Kay O'Connor, purchased the station.
Once again, Reznikov and Keller remained with the station. Reznikov
died in 1979 and Keller died in 1981. In December of 1977,
KCHE-FM began broadcasting. The station could now broadcast live night
sporting events. The decade of the 1980's
will be remember as the time period when the satellite explosion occurred in
broadcasting. Because of satellite programming KCHE AM and FM are able
to provide Iowa State and Iowa Hawkeye football and basketball
coverage plus ABC News. |
